Description

Black bean burgers are a delicious, hearty alternative to traditional meat patties that satisfy your cravings without the guilt.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15 oz) can low-sodium black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large egg (or 1 tbsp flaxseed meal mixed with 3 tbsp water for vegan)
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mash the black beans using a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but slightly chunky.
  2. Sauté the chopped onion in a skillet over medium heat until translucent. Add minced garlic during the last minute of cooking.
  3. Combine the mashed beans, sautéed onion and garlic, breadcrumbs, egg (or flaxseed mixture), spices, salt, and pepper in the bowl. Mix until well combined.
  4. Form the mixture into patties about half an inch thick.
  5. Heat oil in a skillet or preheat your grill over medium heat. Cook each patty for about 5 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through.
  6. Serve on toasted buns with desired toppings.
