Black bean burgers are a delicious, hearty alternative to traditional meat patties that satisfy your cravings without the guilt.

- 1 (15 oz) can low-sodium black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
- 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 large egg (or 1 tbsp flaxseed meal mixed with 3 tbsp water for vegan)
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp chili powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil for cooking
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mash the black beans using a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but slightly chunky.
- Sauté the chopped onion in a skillet over medium heat until translucent. Add minced garlic during the last minute of cooking.
- Combine the mashed beans, sautéed onion and garlic, breadcrumbs, egg (or flaxseed mixture), spices, salt, and pepper in the bowl. Mix until well combined.
- Form the mixture into patties about half an inch thick.
- Heat oil in a skillet or preheat your grill over medium heat. Cook each patty for about 5 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through.
- Serve on toasted buns with desired toppings.
